Convective tipping point initiates localization of basaltic fissure eruptions

چکیده

Basaltic fissure eruptions may evolve rapidly and unpredictably complicating hazard management. Localization of an elongate to one or more focused vents take days months, depends on fluid dynamic processes, such as thermally-driven viscous fingering, in the sub-volcanic plumbing system. However, dynamics a dyke geometry are poorly understood. We perform scaled analogue experiments investigate convective magma exchange flow within dyke-like conduit, discover regimes ranging from chaotic mingling stable, well-organized exchange, over parameter space relevant for natural eruptions. Experiments via Grashof number Gr, which is Reynolds buoyancy-driven flows. propose that at high Gr hinders localization by suppressing whereas organization low enhances localization. Consequently, progressive decrease through increasing viscosity decreasing width pushes eruption towards tipping point results rapid Our findings indicate current conceptual models require revision account this point, provide quantitative framework understanding evolution

Lava Flows during Basaltic Eruptions

12 Observations in the USA, Iceland, and Tenerife, Canary Islands, reveal how processes occurring 13 during basaltic eruptions can result in complex physical and stratigraphic relationships between lava 14 and proximal tephra fall deposits around vents. Observations illustrate how basaltic lavas can 15 disrupt, dissect (spatially and temporally) and alter sheet-form fall deposits. Complexity ar...

Identifying recycled ash in basaltic eruptions

Deposits of mid-intensity basaltic explosive eruptions are characterized by the coexistence of different types of juvenile clasts, which show a large variability of external properties and texture, reflecting alternatively the effects of primary processes related to magma storage or ascent, or of syn-eruptive modifications occurred during or immediately after their ejection. If fragments fall b...

SO2 emissions from basaltic eruptions, and the excess sulfur issue

[1] Volcanic SO2 can affect the Earth’s environment. Where no direct measurements of SO2 in the atmosphere are available, a petrologic method of assessing sulfur release from the magma must be used. However, in studies of arcderived eruptions, satellite-based measurements of SO2 emissions using Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data are orders of magnitude greater than those calculated pe...

Provenance Tipping Point

Capture is a known, difficult problem for provenance. Obtaining from the systems and programs exactly what happened has been a continuing struggle outside of database and workflow systems. The provenance research community has created libraries to log provenance, and has also embedded instances of capture agents within operating systems, specific programs, etc. However, it is impossible to know...

Aesthetic surgery's "tipping point".

As I reflected upon the multiple national meetings I have attended over the last few years, I realized that our specialty is, to borrow from the enlightening author Malcolm Gladwell, a millennial expression, at a “tipping point.” The subject is as difficult to discuss as it is critical, but I am emboldened by the fact that mine is the impression of almost every colleague I have spoken to, wheth...
